Workload:
Workload of student for successfully completing the course. Each ECTS credit represents 30 working hours. These are the combined effort of face-to-face time, post-processing the subject of the lecture, exercises and preparation for the exam.

The total workload is distributed on the semester (01.04.-30.09. during the summer term, 01.10.-31.03. during the winter term).
30 class hours (= 22.5 clock hours) over a 15-week period.
The total student study time is 60 hours (equivalent to 2 ECTS credits).
There are therefore 37.5 hours available for class preparation and follow-up work and exam preparation.

Learning outcomes:
The modules English 1, 2 and 3 should be viewed as a unit. Over the course of these three modules, students should improve their proficiency in vocational English from the assumed entry level B1 to level B2 of the Common European Framework.
 
Module ‘English 1’ is designed to introduce students with widely varying levels of language proficiency to those aspects of the language that are of relevance to their future careers. The module aims to teach and develop the skills that students will require for spoken communication with colleagues and business partners in English-speaking countries or where English is being used to bridge the language gap.
 
The emphasis in this module is on the spoken language skills needed both for face-to-face communicative situations and for making business phone calls. The focus is therefore on spoken proficiency and listening comprehension. A further key feature of this course is its intercultural approach in which students can develop an understanding and appreciation of how the working environment differs in the English-speaking world.

-        Small talk
-        Talking about work
-        Talking about your own employer and place of work
-        Describing the work you do
-        Telephoning
-        General expressions
-        Asking for and giving information
-        Arranging and re-arranging an appointment
-        Basic grammatical structures are also reviewed.
 
Students will acquire the requisite basic vocabulary during self-directed periods of study.
