Learning outcomes:
After successfully completing this module, students will: understand how a democratic constitutional state and its central institutions function and will be able to explain how the law shapes social structures and social reality; have a basic understanding of the concepts and structure of the German legal system; have mastered the methods of processing legal cases and will be able to independently analyze and resolve simple legal issues; know and understand key fundamental rights and be able to reflect on their significance for professional practice in social work; be able to apply the fundamentals of civil law, including liability law relevant to social work, to exemplary practical situations.

Module content:
The module provides an introduction to the legal foundations of professional practice in social work. It teaches the central structures, principles, and working methods of the German legal system and establishes links between legal norms and social practice. Topics covered include: Fundamentals, structure, and functioning of the democratic constitutional state and its institutions, Structure and basic concepts of the German legal system, Fundamental rights under the Basic Law (Grundgesetz), in particular human dignity, equality, and civil liberties relevant to social work, Fundamentals of judicial legal protection and the structure of the German court system, Methods of legal case processing (subsumption, expert opinion style, interpretation), Fundamentals of civil law: legal capacity, contractual capacity, declaration of intent, contract, damages, Fundamentals of liability law, in particular supervisory duties in social work, Practical examples, and case studies from fields of social work.
