Module coordinator:
Prof. Dr. Walter Calles |
Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Walter Calles

|
Learning outcomes:
Starting from an understanding of the relationship between the structure and properties of materials, students will learn the methods used in materials science to measure and modify material properties. Students will then learn to select the materials or material states best suited for particular applications and processes.

Module content:
- Steel (production and how production modifies material properties, steel designation systems) - Annealing, hardening and tempering of steel - Types of steel (construction steels, heat-treatable steels, tool steels, high-temperature and stainless steels) and types of cast iron (cast steel, lamellar, spherulitic and vermicular-graphite cast iron) - Overview of non-ferrous materials (aluminium, titanium, copper and nickel materials) - Plastics (structure and property modifications, characteristic features, fibre-reinforced materials) - Ceramics (structure, manufacture, classification and properties) - Materials testing (hardness, notched-bar impact testing, fracture toughness, vibration resistance, deformation testing) including independent testing by students with systematic documentation and analysis
